According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, the cure rate for this disease is 90 percent, but only if the disease is caught early. Recently, research published in BioMed Central's open access journal Head and Neck Oncology found that oral cavity, oral pharyngea and salivary gland cancers may be the most expensive cancers in the nation to treat.

"The actual study of the social, psychological and economic impacts of these cancers has been understudied," states Dr. Joel Epstein, former professor of oral medicine and diagnostic sciences at the University of Illinois in Chicago

These findings suggest that preventing these diseases should be a priority. Individuals who are trying to avoid developing oral cancer should not smoke, and should be sure to practice proper dental care habits and visit their dentist regularly.
